Arequipa, also known as the White City because of its white walls of volcanic stone, lies at the feet of the volcanoes of Chachani, Misti, and Pichu Pichu.
The sky is clear blue (almost) every day and the sun is very hot, but the evenings and nights are cool because of the high altitude which is 2300 meters over sea level. The centre of the city is placed on the World Cultural Heritage list by UNESCO. Plaza de Armas is surrounded by beautiful buildings including the Cathedral. The Monastery of Santa Catalina is well worth a visit, a Spanish city in miniature with stone streets, beautiful patios, and plazas. The Colca Canyon, is one of the most popular destinations in Peru. Mirador Cruz del Condor is the best point for looking into the depths of the canyon, it's around 1200m deep here. This is also the place where to see the condors circling up from the depths against breathtaking scenery.
